Anne-Marie Slaughter is the Bert G. Kerstetter '66 University Professor of Politics and International Affairs at Princeton University. From 2009 to 2011 she served as Director of Policy Planning for the United States Department of State, the first woman to hold that position. She worked closely with the top leadership of the State Department and USAID as the Executive Director of the first Quadrennial Diplomacy and Development Review, which was released in December 2010 and provides a blueprint for elevating development as a pillar of American foreign policy and leading through civilian power.

Upon leaving the State Department to return to Princeton at the end of her public service leave, she received the Secretary’s Distinguished Service Award for exceptional leadership and professional competence, the highest honor conferred by the State Department. She also received a Meritorious Honor Award from the US. 

Dr. Slaughter was the first woman Dean of Princeton’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, a position she held from 2002 to 2009. She has written or edited six books, including A New World Order (2004) and The Idea That Is America: Keeping Faith with Our Values in a Dangerous World (2007). More recently, her 2012 article in The Atlantic  ("Why Women Still Can't Have it All") has received national attention.
