Graduate Student Organization

Who is the Graduate Student Organization (GSO)?

The Graduate Student Organization (GSO) is a group of graduate-student volunteers. We represent graduate students’ interests to faculty and staff and facilitate discussions of how the Department can better support students. GSO meets with Department Chairs regularly, advocates for needed resources, conveys students’ preferences for job candidates, and organizes professional and social events—among other activities.

Current Facilitators:

Nic Dias (Fall 2022 – Spring 2023)

Sarah Gerstein (Spring 2023 – Fall 2023)

Donald Moratz (Spring 2023 – Fall 2023)

SASGov Representative:

Ify Okpali (Fall 2022 – Spring 2023)

How Does GSO Work?

GSO has a minimum of two representatives at any time. New representatives are publicly nominated and elected every semester, meaning that some representatives’ terms are staggered by one semester. Each representative serves for one year. Every month, GSO holds a public meeting wherein students voice their concerns and GSO updates students on their advocacy efforts. Our meeting minutes can be found here.

What is the Climate Survey?

In response to a public letter written by Black graduate students in 2020, the Department began fielding a (supposedly) yearly survey to gauge the Department’s culture.
