Students may be permitted to transfer credit for a maximum of four course units undertaken in another graduate program. Normally, decisions about transfer credit are made after the student has been at Penn for at least a semester. This is because the granting of credit not only recognizes the value of work done elsewhere, but also in effect reduces the program one must take at Penn, so it is necessary to make the judgment in the context of the student’s overall educational program.
Students seeking transfer credit should give the Graduate Chair a petition listing the courses and a transcript. After consulting with colleagues if necessary, the Graduate Chair makes a recommendation to the Associate Dean for Graduate Studies, who has final authority over transfer credit.
